Sol de Janeira Product Review / Strengthening & Smoothing Hair Range, Brazilian Bum Bum Cream

As soon as my eldest saw this in my sample cupboard she took ownership. In fact she didn’t just take ownership I had to give her square breathing exercises to stop her from hyperventilating at what she exclaimed was ‘the most amazing cream’. Has she tested it? No. So how was she supposed to know. However, it does seem to have developed quite a cult following, going viral on social media and with girls lusting after the brand, like I did at Rouge Noir Nail Varnish when it was first launched.

For those who don’t know, whilst this is a Brazilian brand it is actually primarily now owned by L’Occitane. Sol de Janeiro translates to Sun of January and was co-founded by Hemla Yang Tsuzuki. The ethos of the brand was “love it. Flaunt it. You’ve got it’. The iconic Brazilian Bum Bum Cream was formulated in 2015 and its success of treating cellulite makes it one of the most popular items sold in the beauty industry today.

Brazilian Bum Bum Cream 75ml RRP £16.80

This little pot of magic contains a thick, luxurious cream that is fragranced with pistachio, sweet caramel and vanilla, which makes it a pleasure on the senses to use. So what are the ingredients that make this a best selling product, here’s just a few.

  • Sodium Hyaluronate - attracts moisture to the skin, excellent for wrinkles and dryness.
  • Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil - anti-inflammatory can help treat acne and other inflammatory skin conditions.
  • Euterpe Oleracea (Açai) Fruit Oil - protects the skin against environmental pollution and free radicals such as smoking etc. Also helps improve skins elasticity making it appear and feel firmer.
  • Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuaçu) Seed Butter - skin repairing and also wards off bacteria that causes spots and breakouts.
  • Bertholletia Excelsa Seed Oil - smoothing and firming, helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks and blemishes.
  • Squalane - contains an abundance of anti-oxidants that help to protect the skin, whilst boosting hydration.

There are several more active ingredients that help firm and tone. The consistency is thick, buttery and melts into the skin, making application a doddle. It leaves skin feeling nourished and whilst I’ve only tested the once, with continued use and looking at the ingredients I can see why it’s so popular. It will now go to my eldest whom I’m sure will report back to me daily…..

Brazilian Joia™ Strengthening & Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner 295ml RRP £9.60

When I first opened this it reminded me of one smell only, the banana antibiotic my kids used to have when they were younger. It has that sweet caramel scent that makes you want to have more. Believe me the taste was a Godsend to my kids who would refuse all other medicine. In actual fact it contains similar notes to the Bum Bum Cream but with added Sandalwood (no banana scent at all)!

This range is ideal for fine to medium hair and, as the name suggests contains ingredients to help strengthen strands and smooth the hair shaft, resulting in shinier and easier to manage locks. The Strengthening and Smoothing Shampoo contains moisturising ingredients similar to the Bum Bum Cream but also has as plant based keratin (protein) and a ‘secret’ Seal Technology™ that helps bind dry, split ends giving a smoother finish. Other ingredients include:-
  • Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil - contains a high content of B Carotene that helps strengthen the hair and protect it from the sun.
  • Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil - nourishes a dry and inflamed scalp, gives intense hydration so hair is stronger and promotes a healthier scalp.
The Strengthening and Smoothing Conditioner again, has many similar nourishing and hydrating ingredients as well as:-
  • Panthenol - prevents breakage and penetrates moisture into the hair shaft. Restorative and leaves hair feeling and looking stronger.
  • Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower - improves blood circulation which in turn promotes healthy hair growth. Also helps boost collagen production.
